Lernergebnisse

Natural catastrophes (NatCat), technical disasters triggered by natural hazards (NaTech) and man-made crises lead to large numbers of displaced or shelter-seeking people on a regular basis all around the globe. Climate change and insecure political situations in many areas of the world will boost the number of refugees and migrants in the future which requires a holistic approach in order to find humane and sustainable solutions. Architects play an important role – not just as designers of the built environment but also as mediators between the different stakeholders of a project.

The recently established Disaster Competence Network Austria (DCNA) serves as a scientific collaboration platform between universities and research institutes to bundle the scientific expertise in the field of security and disaster research. The development of emergency shelters has been identified as one of the joint research topics among the member institutions incl. TU Wien and BOKU (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences).

Project Description:
This design studio is collaborating with the WWTF funded project "Urban pop-up housing environments and their potential as local innovation systems", that is carried out by BOKU University, Institute of Technology Assessment (ITA-ÖAW) and alchemia-nova, an institute for closed loop processes (http://popupenvironments.boku.ac.at).
The pop-up housing project focuses on an inter- and transdisciplinary approach to systematically investigate and evaluate existing temporary housing options and to create holistic, innovative and sustainable models for pop-up living systems in urban environments. The core objective is to develop a robust interdisciplinary scientific basis for temporary housing options for diverse scenarios (selected target groups, different temporally unused urban areas, diverse building densities, etc.) in the Viennese context. To get one step further, temporary housing will be conceptualized as local innovation Systems.

Design Task:
This students will form groups with two students each and choose one of the three provided scenarios. In total there will be 6 groups – ideally 2 groups for each topic.
The task is to create design proposals to one of three suggested models of urban temporary housing environments, which should take into consideration the outlined specifications of the pop-up housing project. The result should be a well elaborated design proposal which considers the given requirements for each scenario.

Scenarios:
A detailed description of each scenario can be downloaded here

Compulsory attendance:
To pass the design studios, personal attendance is necessary at intermediate presentations, final presentation and at 50% of the regular consultations. Participants who do not fulfill the required attendance will automatically receive a negative evaluation without any exceptions. The reason for absence (illness etc.) is not relevant.

Language of tuition:
International students are welcome! We will try to communicate most information in English. All participants must have good English proficiency and the final presentation (plans, project description) will be in English.

Examination modalities:
Final presentation with plans and model. Depending on the project the physical model may be replaced by a digital 3D model.

Evaluation criteria:
Design quality, Design quality, functional and structural solution, quality of the model (real or virtual), presentation skills

Required skills:

  • Design Competence: Aesthetic skills are basic requirements
  • Construction and physics:  No need to be an expert but a realistic, feasible and sustainable solution must be provided
  • CAD and 3D Design: Accurate 2D CAD planning is required. 3D design skills and visualizations are beneficial.
