After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

Every unit comprises not only lectures and inputs, but also multiple opportunities for small practical exercises and discussions to interactively convey the following topics:

• General principles of academic work (e.g. what are the characteristics of a scientific writing style?)
• Structure of research manuscripts (e.g. Abstracts, IMRaD-structure)
• Rules of citing and referencing, and the prevention of plagiarism
• The use of reference managers (e.g. Zotero)
• Systematic search for scholarly publications
• Strategies of reading and searching with regards to research outputs
• Understanding and evaluating various types of academic publications
• Rules of scientific integrity

• Conveying fundamental standards of scientific research and academic writing with many small exercises and discussions
• Active use of scientific databases to find relevant academic literature
• Multiple choice tests
• Writing small training parts of scientific papers (portfolio)
• Peer review procedure among the students

The seminar is particularly well-suited for students who prepare to write (or who are in the midst of writing) academic works or similar papers, such as Bachelor theses.

It may be helpful, but not necessary, if students already had an (at least vague) idea of a preferred research topic.

Note that the time (from 15:00 to 17:00) is to be understood sine tempore, so please be punctual.

• Portfolio, consisting of smaller works like abstracts, well-formatted tables or bibliographies that are to be written according to scientific standards
• Two multiple choice tests
• Active participation, including in an internal peer review-procedure

A passable knowledge of English (for reading small text passages) may be useful.
