Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

Provide an overview of the subject area of technology and gender. After the course, students should be able to establish references to their own subject discipline. The relevance of the category gender in technology is made recognisable and visible on different levels in and through the course. The lecture provides an overview of the current state of the debate on gender in engineering. Using selected examples, central fields of research are then discussed and the topic is approached from three sides:

  • "Women in Science and Technology": structural and symbolic barriers for women in these fields, proposed solutions for entry and qualification.
  • "Science and Technology of Gender": production and determination of gendering and gender differences in technological artefacts.
  • "Gender in Science and Technology": meta-analytical approaches to research practice and methodology in the technical sciences, mechanisms of gendering in technical epistemological interests, theorisations, methods, interpretations of results and research practices.

Subject of course

  • Introduction to gender theories: Location, definitions, debates
  • Explanation of terms: sex, gender, diversity, intersectionality
  • Historical development of gender equality debates (1st and 2nd women's movement)
  • Introduction Society - Gender - Technology
  • Women in Science and Technology - Historical contributions of women to science and technology in history
  • Representation(s) of Technology and Engineering: Images of Technology
  • Feminist critique of science and technology: approaches, methods, central research questions
  • Gender policy strategies: managing gender and diversity / anti-discrimination, gender-equitable language, gender budgeting
  • Science and technology studies, gender analysis of technological artefacts
  • Technology use by older people: Case study www.mobiseniora.at
  • Case study Gender in Science: Gender constructions in transport planning methods for mobility surveys
  • Technology and Constructions of Masculinity or: "The Engineer": Historical Development of the Profession
  • Gender and professional cultures or: "What is electrical engineering?"
  • Gender perspectives in SET (Science, Engineering and Technology): Gender criteria in research funding: conceptual considerations and current practice
  • Strategic approaches: fix the women, fix the institutions, fix the knowledge
