Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to deepen their design competency and knowledge in:

  • Sharpening their understanding of space
  • Conceptual and constructive thinking
  • Model making,
  • metal casting,
  • melting processes

Subject of course

'Approximation: Beyond Heat' explores the architectural space from the perspective of the threshold. Starting from an object (door handle), two spaces are envisioned based on the scale of crystallized metal. The door, symbolizing a plane of sharpness, serves as a metaphor for the structure built by hand. The door handle is one of the few elements in architecture that consistently involves direct physical contact and anticipates the moderation of spatiality. Pressing the handle unlocks the space both physically and mentally.

The design aims to sharpen the threshold between two conceptual spaces, starting from a 1:1 model (door handle) to the constructively dramaturgical representation of the transition (sectional model). This process provides a tangible transition between two spatial ideas.

This design work is available both independently and in close connection with the Integrative Design "The Space and the Tower." Simultaneous participation is encouraged. Content from the comprehensive design "The Space and the Tower" can be further explored in this course, specifically focusing on the manufacturing processes.

Teaching methods

The design seeks a reversal of the classical design process and evolves spatiality from a tangible detail. Starting from a 1:1 model (door handle), the plane of sharpness defining the threshold between two (conceptual) spaces is developed.

Examination modalities

The performance assessment includes a well-thought-out architectural design and a comprehensive reflection on the significance of manufacturing and construction processes, encompassing shaping and form formation. The presentation is carried out through precisely crafted visual media and a 1:1 prototype.
