Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to  acquire knowledge about heritage conservation and climate change that can be translated into concrete prevention strategies and professional logics of action.

The expected results of the conservation laboratory will lead to a sensitisation for the urgency of risk preparedness in view of the processual and unfinished reflections on the consequences of climate change for cultural and natural heritage. The innovative potential of the seminar lies in the combination of cultural, natural and climate science expertise and the international perspectives reflected in the examples presented for discussion. We consider that links between nature and culture, objects and processes, regional and global developments and threats will increasingly determine the spectrum of heritage conservation activities in our time of climate change.
The results of the week-long workshop under the lead of Prof. Ingrid Scheurmann will be incorporated into a publication in which all participants will take part.

Subject of course

In an interdisciplinary framework of experts from Germany and Austria, students of heritage conservation, art and restoration science, architecture and urban planning addressed the challenges that climate change poses for the protection and preservation of cultural heritage. The seminar provides information on the potential of cultural heritage as well as security risks, damage prevention measures and adaptation strategies. It combines humanities and history with discourses from the natural and climate sciences, historical monument knowledge with current discussions on values and methods.
